Once upon a time, keeping the roadways safe meant eradicating drunk drivers. While that is still a number one priority, a new safety concern involves distracted driving from talking on a cellular phone. Studies show that holding a mobile device while driving decreases a driver's reaction time considerably. Currently, twenty-eight states have passed varying handsfree laws to curb the use of cell phones while driving. These laws make it illegal for drivers to use their phone without a handsfree device. Many other states are conducting studies or have handsfree bills pending. Handsfree laws are even showing up internationally with restrictions in over 25 other countries, such as Brazil, Australia, South Africa, Japan, and many more.
Most recently, Washington State banned text messaging while driving, a law that went into effect May 2007. No state has completely banned all forms of cell phone use, handheld and handsfree. The new safety laws has created an increasing demand for handheld alternatives such as Bluetooth headsets and professionally installed integrated handsfree car kits. Don't be unsafe!
